Airport operator BAA has reported that traveller numbers for Aberdeen Airport in June 2010 were down by 4% on a year earlier, at 261,500. June's passenger figures were affected by strike action at British Airways. BAA's other two Scottish airports in Edinburgh and Glasgow airports were also down, by 2% to 854,000 and 7% to 684,700 respectively, as flights around the UK were hit by the cabin-crew strike at BA. Aberdeen has now had 26 consecutive months of negative year-on-year comparisons in its passenger figures. However, last month’s total was bolstered by a small increase in helicopter business, which showed the resilience of the energy industry, Kevin Brown is giving up his role as managing director at the end of this month to take over at Edinburgh Airport. He is cautiously optimistic about the future at Aberdeen. Mr Brown said: “The BA strike was the key factor in our drop in June, hitting us just as it did the rest of the group. “Despite that, these latest figures do make us cautiously optimistic about the future.” said Mr Brown. He added: “Everyone is confident that will continue.” Read more: http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Article.aspx/1824310#ixzz0tYSKIBGG |

Tony Hayward, the embattled chief of BP is expected to stand down from the oil giant by 27 July 2010, according to widespread reports. Bob Dudley, who recently took over the handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil leak that has brought the company to crisis point, is widely tipped as his likely successor. A meeting of the BP board is underway with the main topics of conversation said to be when to break the news and the level of compensation to be paid to Hayward, who has been with BP for 28 years. BP publishes its second quarter results on Tuesday and the board are said to be keen to use the announcement to draw a line under the disaster in the Gulf. Hayward has been heavily criticised for his handling of the attempts to stem the oil leak and the subsequent clean-up operation. A series of PR gaffes and repeated under-estimates by BP of the scale of the leak have also made him a high-profile target for both the US public and politicians. |

Interserve, a support services firm with headquarters in Reading, has reported that two of its schemes have been affected by the cuts implemented by the coalition Government to the £55bn school building scheme. The firm's £150m project in St Helens under the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme has been cancelled, while the £280m Sandwell scheme has been scaled back. Interserve predicts challenging conditions in 2010 as the squeeze is felt across the public sector, which accounts for around 30% of its profits. However, its business in the Middle East has performed well due to new awards including a new road maintenance deal in Dubai. The firm has visibility of over 90% of this year's revenues and 60% of revenue in 2011. Its order book has fallen from £6.5bn to £6bn during the first half. Interserve remains confident of meeting expectations for the full year, but first-half profits will be lower than last year due to high start-up costs on public sector facilities management contracts for Government departments including the Home Office and Foreign Office. Tough competition has also squeezed the performance of its specialist arm, which offers services such as security, lift maintenance and electrical engineering. Additional restructuring of the division is under way which is likely to mean job losses among its 2,700 staff. Finance director Tim Jones resigned in June 2010 to join pubs group Mitchell's & Butlers. |

David Jones, former Finance Director at Northern Rock, has been fined £320,000 by the financial services authority. Jones has also been stopped from undertaking regulated activity work in the future. Jones permitted incorrect mortgage arrears to be quoted with the accounts for Northern Rock in 2006. If the right figures were reported then arrears would have increased by more than half and possessions should have been up by 300%. Margaret Cole, The Financial Services Authority director for financial crime, stated Even though other senior directors within the firm were involved in the misreporting of arrears and possessions figures, as a senior director himself and as an FSA authorised person, Jones had a duty to reveal the true position to the public and to important internal committees. He had numerous opportunities to put things right, but failed to do so. This is a message to all FSA approved persons, that they must take their individual responsibilities seriously at all times, or suffer the consequences. |

South Lakeland District Council has approved plans to set aside £50,000 to search for a new chief executive. A consultant will be appointed to oversee the recruitment. The cost has been criticised by Conservative and Labour councillors as being too high. Cllr Tom Harvey, finance spokesmand for the council's Conservative Group, said: “They will end up spending what will be 50 per cent of what will be their annual salary on recruitment. The costs are purely paying consultants to find somebody to be the chief executive of SLDC. Brendan Jameson, leader of SLDC, said: “It is a similar amount that other authorities put aside for recruiting a chief executive. Just because we have put it aside, does not mean we will spend it. I will be disappointed if we spend more than half. “We don’t want to pay any more than we need to, but who are we going to attract if we offer the basics – a basic person. If we want to get good people, then we have to offer a realistic salary. We want to be excellent and we want an excellent chief executive to take us there. |

The Western Education and Library Board is reducing staff numbers because of budget cuts. The board has an annual budget of £235m of which £158m is given over to schools, while there is an estimated £5m shortfall in the remaining £77m which the board controls. This is believed to be insufficient to fund services such as special education, school support and school transport in the board's area of Tyrone, Fermanagh and Londonderry. The board will need an extra £1m to help implement the current cost reduction programme and cut management and administration jobs. Assistant chief finance officer, Stan McIvor, said: People will express an interest in taking up voluntary retirement; to do that the board needs the funding for staff leaving as they are entitled to redundancy. |

Yorkshire County Cricket Club's chief executive, Stewart Regan, has resigned in order to move to the Scottish Football Association. The cricket club's chairman, Colin Graves, will take over until a replacement is appointed. The cricket club has also announced the loss of five or six backroom staff. Mr Graves said: I have told my board colleagues that I intend to take the role of executive chairman for a period of at least six months after Stewart's departure, after which we will then decide on the most appropriate structure to manage the club going forward. There will be minor job losses – maybe five to six office staff – but we're no different to any business in that respect and I don't envisage any cuts on the playing or coaching side. Hopefully, we'll end up in a break-even situation at the end of the year and we're certainly not in financial crisis. |
