25/06/2009 09:00:26 - Expanding Discount Supermarket - Opening Hours Extended - Selby
The Aldi supermarket at Selby is being extended in July, 2009. Around a quarter more retail area will be provided and the store will be open for longer hours. Improvements include more display units, new chillers and new freezers offering a wider product range. Manager at the store, Shaun McCowliff, stated "Preparations are well underway to reveal an impressive new-look store here in Selby. We look forward to offering a wider range of quality goods at affordable prices, as well as offering customers a more relaxing shopping environment. We're planning a celebratory reopening for our customers, but in the meantime it's business as usual and we're keeping disruption to an absolute minimum so customers can continue to enjoy shopping at the store".
22/06/2009 10:24:15 - New Discounted Supermarket Planned - 30 New Jobs Anticipated - Westhoughton
Aldi are planning to erect a new discount supermarket at Westhoughton at the Old Glebe Mill, behind Market Street. A councillor for the area said “In the space of 18 months we have gone from one supermarket to potentially four sites being the subject of planning applications or under development. Westhoughton town centre has been left behind in the last 30 years. We have had several housing estates built but the town centre has not kept pace. Quite a lot of people have to go out of Westhoughton to shop. Residents need to get involved. We need to hear from people to find out what they want.” A planning meeting is to be held at the council on Wednesday 24th June 2009 to discuss the proposals. 30 new jobs are expected at the new store should planning permission be forthcoming.

Aldi Stores Ltd is planning to build a new store in Broughton, Flintshire, following the successful opening of a branch in Flint, in November 2008. The company is seeking the views of residents over the proposed store, which would create between 12 and 15 new jobs. Mark Hewlett is Aldi Stores Ltd's property director for the region.

Aldi are building a new store at Monmouth Road, Abergavenny. The new supermarket is expected to create around 20 new jobs for the residents in the area. No date for completion has been announced but a request to clear the site has been made to the council. Planning permission for the store has been given full sanction.

Aldi Stores Ltd is recruiting 16 staff for a new store at Trentham Lakes, Stoke-on-Trent. The store will be the seventh Aldi in Stoke-on-Trent and will open on 2 July 2009. A manager has already been appointed, as well as 10 members of staff, but three store assistant positions are still available.

Aldi Stores Ltd is opening a new branch in Studley, Worcestershire on 25 June 2009, creating 15 new jobs. The store will offer a wide selection of produce, from locally baked bread through to household cleaning products and beauty essentials. Lloyd White is manager of Aldi's Studley store.

Aldi, a discount grocery supermarket chain, have announced plans to open a new store in Crewe, as part of its ongoing business development and expansion strategy. Plans have been submitted to Cheshire East Council for approval of the £multi-million supermarket on a former pub site. Under the proposals, the building would be demolished in order to allow the construction of the 1,348sq metre food supermarket. On approval and completion, the site developments are expected to create up to 15 new jobs. The store will be the 2nd in the area for the retailer.

Aldi are proposing to build a new supermarket in Harrogate. Directors are planning to move into a vacant building next to the Focus store at Skipton Road and extend the building to 14000 square feet. Agreement has been given to a discount supermarket at the site when permission was granted in 2008. A report stated "there is a major deficiency in the provision of food retailing regarding the discount sector". Aldi, together with the developers, are to undertake changes to the highway infrastructure surrounding the store to alleviate traffic problems.

Aldi have announced plans to open a further 1000 new stores around Europe during the course of 2010. Many new sites are planned for the UK. The company have experienced growth during the recession as consumers look for cheaper goods. As at December, 2008, there were 4745 stores in overseas countries with 4267 of these in Germany. Turnover in foreign countries for 2008 stood at £22.8billion.

Plans are being exhibited for a new supermarket in Pocklington, East Riding. It is estimated that the new store would cost around £4million to complete, providing an estimated 15 new jobs for residents in the area. Aldi already have a store 12 miles away at York and have been searching for another site in the area for some time.
